Mining data acquisition and analysis system using machine learning
Description
The activities of the mining sector are of capital importance because of the richness of the Canadian subsoil. However, the in-situ identification and quantification of minerals present a challenge for the industry. To meet the needs of the mining sector, we want to design and implement an integrated system combining two complementary spectral technologies allowing rapid detection of mineralogy as well as identification of concentration or grade. This system will be able to perform detection directly on the rock face. The combination of components requires the data is gathered in real time, thanks to the device. It is therefore essential to design acquisition systems that allow the system to function properly during testing in a mining environment. Using the mineralogical data collected during the testing phase and additional data provided by our partners, we want to work on algorithms using machine learning to predict or detect more quickly areas of interest in the future, thus making the devices even more efficient for exploration and mining.

Optical Engineering research labLed by Prof. Simon Thibault, PhD, Ing., the Optical Engineering research lab (LRIO in french) at Université Laval is the only Canadian laboratory offering post-graduate training in optical design. Our goal is to develop solutions in different fields of study within modern optics, working on both theoretical and practical applications for teledetection, machine vision and industrial inspection.
